Overcoming High Winds and Site Challenges for a Successful 5-Sector Cell Tower Project
What was the challenge?
Our valued client and partner, a telecommunications infrastructure services provider that offers end-to-end solutions for telecom operators, has hired Alpha Platforms for another crucial and time-sensitive 5-sector cell tower upgrade project in Spring Hill, Florida
The first challenge was to get to the site. The site presented difficult sandy terrain conditions through the forest with overhanging tree branches, which posed obstacles to getting to the site. Heavy cranes would struggle to navigate and risk getting stuck.
The second obstacle was Florida's famous high winds. Our team had to organize safe work around delicate equipment at 190 feet high with winds of up to 27 miles per hour. Normally, most cranes would call off their operations at 17 miles per hour.
The third challenge was completing the project within just 5 days.

What was the outcome?
The project unfolded over several stages. Despite facing winds up to 27 miles per hour 18 outdated antennas and a few naked sectors were removed in just a day and a half. Subsequently, two and a half days were dedicated to installing new sectors and 15 new antennas, using Alpha’s work cage Power Lift System, and eliminating the need for an external crane. The work was carried out from several set-up positions to ensure maximum safety during lifting operations. As the client was committed to completing the project as scheduled, the Alpha crew continued working even after sunset until the job was done.
The fifth day was used for final adjustments, ensuring a seamlessly upgraded and fully operational cell tower. As a result, despite the persistent challenges, including challenging site access and high winds, Alpha Platforms with the client’s team completed the project as scheduled within five days.

My company used alpha lifts to clean a 14 floor building and they were great. Very accommodating, always on time, and will work with you to get the job done safe and sound. The lifts they provide are state of the art and can pretty much reach any low rise building under 250 feet. I’d recommend them to anyone doing window cleaning or facade cleaning, or anything king of height access work!
We wanted to give it a try and see what this boom truck could do. We loved the idea of a wide basket that could reach up to 30 feet and get to the brick wall over the roof. The main reason we loved the truck was how it maneuvered the boom to lower the bricks inside a dumpster, which was located behind the truck. It saved us at least one extra day of work. It all went great.
Alpha has the most efficient and leanest site setup time I’ve ever seen. My brother, who is the top climber of our group, first struggled to understand how this cage could go around the tower better than the crane - and when it did the whole 360°, he became a believer. Also, each laborer said how incredibly safe they felt - very different from the small crane basket. We were able to secure and push back the panels in place without the basket ever moving.
The project was performed successfully, and we were really glad to have contactless means of reaching the building, as we all know that pipe scaffold might damage the structure, in this case, very very sensitive.
