Philadelphia CHOP Sign Replacement With Crane Collaboration

Case Study:

How Our 300-ft Boom Lift Collaborated with a 300-Ft Crane to Replace a Huge Sign at 240 ft in Half a Day

What was the challenge?

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to the care of children since 1855. Their Abramson Research Center is located across the street from the main building connected by the glass skybridge. CHOP updated its logo and replaced them on all buildings except for one. The Abramson Research Center’s old logo with broken lights still needed replacement.

The Abramson Research Center’s building sign is located atop its 240-ft tower that rises above its roof. The roof has a BMU designed to be moved up and service the tower if needed. Curiously, when the skybridge across the street was built, its placement right under the tower made it impossible to move the BMU to the tower roof anymore, eliminating the only path to access the sign. As a result, the sign's broken lights have not been replaced because the BMU could no longer be used to service the tower.

Without a BMU, the only option was to use a crane basket and crane to remove and replace the sign. The old sign was weathered and fragile, requiring gentle care, which made using a crane basket extremely risky.

A local family-owned and operated, full-service signage and lighting fabricator that’s been in business for more than 100 years was engaged to replace CHOP building signs.

What was the solution?

1
The client engaged Alpha Platforms and a local crane company to remove the old sign and install the new one. Given the height of the building and the required 55-ft side reach, we dispatched the A-300, our largest boom lift at 300 ft, capable of 106-ft side reach.
2
Two sign company technicians attached the old sign to the lifting hook, removed it, and carefully lowered it to the ground.
3
They adjusted the old pins to fit the new sign hooks, lifted the new sign from the trailer with the crane, attached the sign to the pins, and turned on the new lights.
4
These signs were extremely fragile and could not withstand accidentally hitting anything. That meant swinging from a crane's hook was not an option. So, the crew attached them to the lift cage as well for extra stability on the way up and down. Our full-time operator managed the lift during the entire process, enabling the crew to solely focus on the job at hand.

What was the outcome?

On Saturday, the work crews blocked one side of the street and completed the entire project in half a day, between 10 am and 3 pm.

Our 300-ft boom lift was the only available option to lift the workers and maneuver a gentle approach for dismantling and installing the signs at 240 ft with 57 ft of side reach without risking damage.

I called Mike from Alpha platforms at 10am for a emergency facade repair on a 18 stories building and by 12:30 they were mobilized to bring my crew up to remove the falling bricks.

If you're looking for equipment rental in NY, you should use Alpha Platforms. Not only do they provide certified operators (which is hard to find!), but they're also extremely helpful and professional. I called Friday at 3 pm for a job Tuesday morning and they made it happen - checking the site for safety, planning out the whole operation, and getting all the paperwork done asap. We've used them since and everyone is always very happy with the work that they do.

It was a pleasure to work with Alpha Platforms, the crew was skilled and helpful, the equipment was top-notch. Our installers appreciated the security of the platform vs working off of a swing stage, it made their job easier and more efficient. From the first meeting thru to the end of the work day everything ran as smoothly as it could. We will definitely be partnering with Alpha Platforms on future projects. Thank you for your help!

Ryan Hughes

I had an emergency project on a 140' high voltage tower and needed Alpha Platforms next day. They were so helpful and expedient walking me through the entire process so I was comfortable with the deal. They showed up to my site next day and cut about 2 days off of the project due to the safety, speed and efficiency of their lift and operators. I'll never rent or hire another lift company. I would recommend Alpha platforms for all your high reach needs.

That is a fine piece of equipment! And the competent, professional group that goes along with it is just the cherry on top. I really appreciate everything. I'm sure we'll be able to use Alpha again in the future as we get these opportunities. In fact, it will only help our business knowing we have a safe, reliable solution to these over 50‘ height challenges.

We had an exceptional experience with Alpha! They are professionals, great operator team. Overall reliable, recommended will certainly return for my future needs hands down.

My company used alpha lifts to clean a 14 floor building and they were great. Very accommodating, always on time, and will work with you to get the job done safe and sound. The lifts they provide are state of the art and can pretty much reach any low rise building under 250 feet. I’d recommend them to anyone doing window cleaning or facade cleaning, or anything king of height access work!

We wanted to give it a try and see what this boom truck could do. We loved the idea of a wide basket that could reach up to 30 feet and get to the brick wall over the roof. The main reason we loved the truck was how it maneuvered the boom to lower the bricks inside a dumpster, which was located behind the truck. It saved us at least one extra day of work. It all went great.

Alpha has the most efficient and leanest site setup time I’ve ever seen. My brother, who is the top climber of our group, first struggled to understand how this cage could go around the tower better than the crane - and when it did the whole 360°, he became a believer. Also, each laborer said how incredibly safe they felt - very different from the small crane basket. We were able to secure and push back the panels in place without the basket ever moving.

The project was performed successfully, and we were really glad to have contactless means of reaching the building, as we all know that pipe scaffold might damage the structure, in this case, very very sensitive.
